Details: Found in isolated fresh water marshes in Novia Scotia and Eastern Quebec, this breed of turtle was discovered around the turn of the century having apparently adapted to the increased number of predatory sea birds which had moved inland due to depleting fish stock. The elongated neck allowed the turtle to feed on surface vegetation and plants, while staying in the shelter of rocks or underwater. The extended tail acts as a propelling rudder for a fast escape from predators. Unfortunately, these unique adaptations were unable to protect this breed from it's most fearsome predator, man. Marinated turtle-snake neck was considered a delicacy and an aphrodisiac in these French colonies and the species was quickly extinguished.
This special creature although composed of real animal parts, was not born this way and is therefore a gaff. It comes mounted on a wooden plaque which has been artificially aged to look c. 1913, is approximately 12" in length.
We also offer a variety of deformed turtles, including multi-headed and multi-legged upon request.
